Happy Friday!

Friday’s are my favorite day of the week! I get to go home for the weekend and have some time to relax away from school! One of the hardest things at home is keeping with my healthy eating and working out. There is a gym at school so it is so easy to just go there and get my workouts in! At home I also have a job so I am constantly on the go for that and do not always have time to eat something healthy. 

Make sure you stay tuned for more workouts that you can do with no equipment and snacks that you can make beforehand that you can take on the go with you!

At Home No Equipment Ab Workout

Small dorm rooms and apartments are not the ideal place to get good workouts in. Gym memberships can be expensive and sometimes you may not have time to leave the house and go to a gym. There are a lot of workouts that you can do in small spaces in a small period of time. Try doing this ab workout every day before you get in the shower!

plank- 1 minute

crunches- 10 regular, 10 legs bent in the air, 10 legs up, 10 legs to right, 10 legs to left

Russian twists- 10-15

legs in the air, bring your arms to your toes- 10

bicycle crunches- 10-15

Do 3 or 4 reps and you’ll leave the house feeling good!

Traveling Do’s and Don’ts

I’ve been on the road all week traveling back and forth from Pennsylvania visiting family and I thought, “this would make a great blog post!”

Being on the road for long periods of time can seem tedious. At some times all you have is the snacks that you brought along for the ride, which makes you want to constantly eat. Your body is mistaking boredom for hunger.

Some tips for surviving long car rides include;

  1. Do NOT pack junk food! We are more prone to sitting and eating a whole bag of potato chips because there are more in the bag! Substitute the bag of chips for some apples or carrots! Pack a cooler with fresh fruits and veggies to snack on while driving.
  2. Water Water Water! A lot of people tend to pack sugary drinks such as pop and juice to keep them awake during the drive. Healthy foods will do the same thing for you and they are not full of unnecessary sugar! Buy a case of bottled water before you leave (usually around 3-5 dollars at any grocery store) or bring a reusable water bottle! Most rest stops have water fountains!
  3. Remember the meal planning we talked about in the last post? Use the same tips for road trips! You may not have access to a microwave, but you can keep salads, fruits and veggies in a cooler!

Keep calm and travel on! With these healthy tips road trips will be a breeze! (And you wont be wasting money at fast food restaurants on the way!!!)

Meal Planning 101 — March 23, 2016

Meal Planning 101

One of the hardest things about staying healthy is trying not to over-eat. Being a college student or working 40 hours a week makes this even more difficult. It is so easy to stop at a fast food restaurant or grab a candy bar or bag of chips out a vending machine, but what you don’t know is those foods you are eating will not keep you full for long and will then result in you eating more!

Meal planning is an easy way to have quick meals or snacks on the go that are healthy and affordable. Buying food in bulk is a lot cheaper than buying just a few items at once and you can use them for the whole week!

A common myth about meal planning is that it gets boring. However this may be true, switching the meals up will keep it interesting and you will not be eating the same thing every day. All you have to do is buy pre-made, frozen (or non frozen) food and put it in a container and bring it to work or school. When you are hungry, put it in the microwave or take it right out of the refrigerator and go!

Some of the most common things to put in these pre-made meals include chicken, salads, vegetables, fruit, nuts and other quick and healthy foods.

So there ya have it!  You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a healthy meal on the go! As long as you have a microwave, you’re set! So go ahead! Make meals for next week! You’ll be surprised how good they can be!

Happy St. Patricks Day!

Since today is St. Patricks Day and many of you will be running around to parties, parades and bars all day, I figured I’d give you all some tips on how to stay healthy (kind of) on a day like today.

  1. Drink in MODERATION!!!! If you are planning on going out today, and are 21 of course, make sure you do not drink a lot at once or in the day. Beer, and all alcohol has calories and you do not want to drink your daily calories.
  2. Water is your best friend. Make sure to bring a bottle of water with you everywhere you go, today and every day!
  3. Plan your meals! I know that it is hard to plan when you are going to eat but it is important! You do not want to find yourself snacking at one minute and at the next eating a meal! Space out your snacks and meals. Your body will thank you for it.
  4. Walk everywhere! Park your car in one place and then walk to everywhere that you are planning on going. This will not only help if you have been drinking, but it will get some exercise  in when you are busy!
  5. Have Fun and Be Safe!!!!!

Trail Mix Made Easy!

As a college student, I know how hard it can be to grab something to  eat before running to class, sports or clubs….but this is IMPORTANT! Many people think that when they are trying to loose weight they should stop or cut back on their eating. Loosing weight and staying healthy is almost the complete opposite! Your body needs energy and food gives you that energy! Instead of not eating, eat HEALTHY! Here is a healthy grab and go snack that you can make a big amount of and save for the whole week, or make something quick for right now! You can substitute any of the ingredients in here for something else but remember….this should be healthy and give you energy!

On the Go Trail Mix

Ingredients:

Almonds

Peanuts

Cashews

M&Ms

Raisins (or any dried fruit of your choice)

Put all ingredients into a small container (or plastic bag if you are in a rush) Mix up and enjoy!

See? This healthy snack will keep you going in between your big meals. You can make a big batch and pick on it throughout the week! Remember, do NOT just sit there with the whole container! (it is very easy to do) Make sure you portion control! There is such a thing as TOO MUCH!!!!
